Lionel Roy Emery, age 74, passed away on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at his home, following a lingering illness. He was born October 30, 1937 in Caro, the son of the late Lionel and Rena (Morse) Emery.
Roy was a Caro High School graduate. On June 25, 1960 he was united in marriage with the former Margaret Branham. Roy was drafted into the United States Army shortly after his marriage and served at the Presidio in San Francisco. He then attended Ferris State Institute and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. Roy was a professional draftsman and in 1976 became a licensed surveyor. During his working career, he drew maps for the federal government, was a highway inspector for the Virginia State Highway Department, worked many years as a company surveyor and then as a self-employed surveyor. He was a member of the Caro United Methodist Church and for many years took the Good Samaritan calls. He loved his work and also enjoyed working on cars, leather carving and collecting guns.
Roy is survived by his wife, Margaret Emery of Caro; one son and daughter-in-law, Jason & Shannon Emery of Caro; a sister, Joanne Crawford of Caro; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by one brother, Wayne Emery; a brother-in-law, Lewis Crawford; and a nephew, Thomas Crawford.
In keeping with Roy's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Thursday, June 21, 2012 at 8:00 p.m. with Chris Taylor officiating. The family will receive friends at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home on Thursday from 6:00 p.m. until the time of the service at 8:00 p.m. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to the Good Samaritan Fund.
